Time, Speed and Distance questions with solutions
6 from the 185-question pool, worked in full.
1. A 210-metre train crosses a pole in 7 seconds. What is its speed?
- A. 100 km/h
- B. 108 km/h ✓
- C. 104 km/h
- D. 112 km/h
Solution. Speed = 210 m ÷ 7 s = 30 m/s. Converting: 30 × 18/5 = 108 km/h.
2. A man covers a certain distance by car at 45 km/h and returns the same distance by bike at 30 km/h. Find his average speed for the entire journey.
- A. 34 km/h
- B. 36 km/h ✓
- C. 37.5 km/h
- D. 38 km/h
Solution. For equal distances, average speed = 2ab/(a+b) = 2×45×30/(45+30) = 2,700/75 = 36 km/h.
3. Two vehicles start from the same village and travel in opposite directions at 40 km/h and 55 km/h. After how many hours will they be 285 km apart?
- A. 2.5 hours
- B. 3 hours ✓
- C. 3.5 hours
- D. 4 hours
Solution. Since they move in opposite directions, relative speed = 40+55 = 95 km/h. Time = 285/95 = 3 hours.
4. A car covers 315 km in 7 hours. Find its speed.
- A. 43 km/h
- B. 45 km/h ✓
- C. 47 km/h
- D. 49 km/h
Solution. Speed = distance/time = 315/7 = 45 km/h.
5. How far does a car travel at 80 km/h in 3.5 hours?
- A. 270 km
- B. 280 km ✓
- C. 290 km
- D. 300 km
Solution. Distance = Speed × Time = 80 × 3.5 = 280 km.
6. Two cars start from the same point and travel in opposite directions at 48 km/h and 62 km/h. After how many hours will they be 385 km apart?
- A. 3 hours
- B. 4 hours
- C. 4.5 hours
- D. 3.5 hours ✓
Solution. Since they move in opposite directions, relative speed = 48 + 62 = 110 km/h. Time = 385/110 = 3.5 hours.
