    Solution. Combined rate = 1/24 + 1/16 = 2/48 + 3/48 = 5/48 of the work per day, so the work takes 48/5 = 9.6 days.

  2. 2. A can finish a job in 10 days and B can finish it in 15 days. Working together, how many days will they take?

    Solution. Combined rate = 1/10+1/15 = 1/6 of the job per day, so together they take 6 days.

    Solution. Total work = 8 × 12 = 96 man-days. With 6 men, days = 96 ÷ 6 = 16.

  6. 6. A crew completes a job in 20 days. After working alone for 4 days, it is joined by a second crew that works at one-third of the first crew's rate. How many more days are needed?

    • A. 12 days
    • B. 10 days
    • C. 15 days
    • D. 9 days

    Solution. First crew completes 1/5 in 4 days, leaving 4/5. Combined rate=1/20+1/60=1/15. Time=(4/5)/(1/15)=12 days.
