VIT Engineering Entrance Examination 2026: MPCEA Mathematics Stream
The 2026 pattern introduced negative marking, and material from 2025 will tell you otherwise. A wrong answer now deducts 1 against 4 for a correct one, where the previous cycle deducted nothing at all, so a habit built on last year's paper of answering everything regardless has become expensive. Fifteen of the 125 questions are Aptitude and English rather than science, worth 60 of the 500 marks between them. Mathematics is the largest block at 40 questions and 160 marks. This is the MPCEA Mathematics stream, and 150 minutes across 125 questions leaves 72 seconds each.

This is the MPCEA Mathematics stream. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each incorrect answer deducts 1 mark; an unanswered question, or one marked for review without an answer, scores zero. The 2026 pattern introduced this negative-marking rule, replacing the no-negative-marking rule used in 2025. That works out to about 72 seconds per question on average, before any time spent reading instructions or revisiting marked answers. The 5 sections are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Aptitude and English. Mathematics carries the most, 160 marks of the 500 or about 32%, against 20 marks for English. All sections share one composite timer, so you are free to move between them and spend your time where it earns most.
VITEEE MPCEA Mathematics Stream marking scheme
- Each correct answer is worth 4 marks.
- A wrong answer deducts 1 mark; an unattempted question scores zero.
- A guess therefore breaks even at 20% accuracy: above that it gains you marks on average, below it loses them. A blind guess between four options is right 25% of the time, which is already above that line, so an educated guess is worth making rather than leaving the question blank.
- Worked example: attempt 100 of the 125 questions and get 75 right and 25 wrong, and you score 275 out of 500.
