Two languages, two locked hours, nothing else. Paper I sets 100 General Hindi questions and 100 General English questions, each part inside its own 60-minute window, and when a part closes its unused time cannot move to the other. That symmetry is the whole paper. There is no reasoning section and no general awareness to fall back on, so a candidate strong in one language and weak in the other has nowhere to hide. Paper I only shortlists. Paper II is a 200-mark descriptive translation and essay paper, which a multiple-choice interface cannot reproduce and which is not built here.

Timing: Each part has its own 60-minute timer. Once a part closes, unused time cannot be moved to the other part.
Paper II is a 200-mark descriptive paper with Hindi to English translation, English to Hindi translation, and one essay in each language. It is not modeled here because an MCQ interface cannot reproduce descriptive translation and essay writing accurately. Paper I marks are used to shortlist candidates for Paper II.

That works out to about 36 seconds per question on average, before any time spent reading instructions or revisiting marked answers. The 2 sections are General Hindi and General English. All 2 sections carry 100 marks each, so none of them repays disproportionate preparation and a weakness anywhere costs the same. All 2 sections are separately timed, so time saved in one cannot be carried into another. You cannot bank minutes by rushing an easy section.
SSC Combined Hindi Translators Paper I marking scheme
- Each correct answer is worth 1 mark.
- A wrong answer deducts 0.25 marks; an unattempted question scores zero.
- A guess therefore breaks even at 20% accuracy: above that it gains you marks on average, below it loses them. A blind guess between four options is right 25% of the time, which is already above that line, so an educated guess is worth making rather than leaving the question blank.
- Worked example: attempt 160 of the 200 questions and get 120 right and 40 wrong, and you score 110 out of 200.
