Data Sufficiency questions with solutions

6 from the 157-question pool, worked in full.

  1. 1. Determine whether the two statements are sufficient to identify the positive integer n. (1) n^2 < 30. (2) n is a multiple of 4.

    • A. Statement 1 alone is sufficient
    • B. Statement 2 alone is sufficient
    • C. Either statement alone is sufficient
    • D. Both statements together are sufficient, but neither alone is sufficient

Solution. Statement 1 allows n=1,2,3,4,5. Statement 2 allows many positive multiples of 4. Together the only possibility is n=4.

  2. 2. What is the interest rate on a fixed deposit? Statement I: A deposit of ₹50,000 earns ₹6,000 as simple interest in 2 years. Statement II: The deposit doubles in 16.67 years at the same rate.

    • A. Statement I alone is sufficient
    • B. Statement II alone is sufficient
    • C. Both statements together are needed
    • D. Either statement alone is sufficient

Solution. Statement I alone gives rate = (6,000×100)/(50,000×2) = 6%. Statement II alone: for the sum to double, rate = 100/16.67 ≈ 6%. Either statement alone is sufficient.

  3. 3. Is X greater than Y? Statement I: X is twice as large as Z, and Z is 15. Statement II: Y is 25.

    • A. Statement I alone is sufficient
    • B. Statement II alone is sufficient
    • C. Both statements together are needed
    • D. Either statement alone is sufficient

    Solution. Statement I alone gives X = 30 but says nothing about Y. Statement II alone gives Y = 25 but says nothing about X. Combined, X = 30 > Y = 25, so both statements together are needed.

  4. 4. Who is older, X or Y? Statement I: X is older than Z. Statement II: Y is younger than Z.

    • A. Statement II alone is sufficient
    • B. Both statements together are still not sufficient
    • C. Both statements together are sufficient, but neither alone
    • D. Statement I alone is sufficient

    Solution. Neither statement alone compares X and Y directly. Combined, X > Z and Y < Z together give X > Z > Y, so X is definitely older than Y — sufficient only when both are used together.

  5. 5. What is the value of a? Statement I: a squared = 81. Statement II: a = 9.

    • A. Statement I alone is sufficient, but Statement II alone is not sufficient
    • B. Statement II alone is sufficient, but Statement I alone is not sufficient
    • C. Both statements together are sufficient, but neither alone is sufficient
    • D. Neither statement is sufficient, even when combined

    Solution. Statement I alone gives a = 9 or a = -9 (not sufficient). Statement II alone directly states a = 9 (sufficient).

  6. 6. Is the integer n divisible by 5? Statement I: n ends in the digit 5. Statement II: n is an odd number.

Solution. Statement I alone confirms divisibility by 5 directly (any number ending in 5 is divisible by 5). Statement II alone only says n is odd, which does not determine divisibility by 5 (not sufficient).
