Syllogism questions with solutions

  1. 1. Statements: All books are papers. Some papers are pens. Conclusions: I. Some pens are books. II. Some papers are books.

    • A. Only I follows

    Solution. "All books are papers" validly converts to "some papers are books" (II follows). The papers that are pens are not established to include any books, so I does not follow.

  2. 2. Statements: All doctors are educated. Some educated people are wealthy. Conclusion: Some doctors are wealthy. Does this conclusion follow?

    • A. Follows definitely
    • B. Follows only in reverse
    • C. Does not follow necessarily ✓
    • D. Data insufficient

    Solution. The wealthy people among the educated need not include any doctors, so the conclusion does not necessarily follow.

  3. 3. Statements: No fish are mammals. All whales are mammals. Conclusion: No whales are fish. Is this conclusion valid?

    • C. Cannot be determined
    • D. Partially valid

    Solution. Since all whales are mammals and no mammals are fish, it follows that no whales are fish.

  4. 4. No ceramic item is flexible. Some prototypes are flexible. What must follow?

    • A. No prototype is ceramic
    • B. All prototypes are flexible
    • C. Some prototypes are not ceramic ✓
    • D. Some ceramic items are prototypes

    Solution. The flexible prototypes cannot be ceramic, so at least some prototypes are not ceramic.

  5. 5. Statements: No insect is a mammal. All mammals are vertebrates. Conclusion: Some vertebrates are not insects. Is this conclusion valid?

    • A. Valid ✓
    • B. Cannot be determined
    • C. Invalid
    • D. Partially valid

    Solution. Since no insect is a mammal and all mammals are vertebrates, the mammals (which are vertebrates) are guaranteed not to be insects, so "some vertebrates are not insects" validly follows.

  6. 6. Statements: All pens are stationery. Some stationery is costly. Conclusions: I. Some pens are costly. II. All pens are stationery.

    • A. Only conclusion I follows
    • B. Only conclusion II follows ✓
    • C. Both conclusions follow
    • D. Neither conclusion follows

    Solution. Conclusion II restates the first statement. The costly stationery need not include any pen, so conclusion I does not follow.
