How selection works
CEN 09/2025 provides for a Computer Based Test followed by a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test, Document Verification and Medical Examination. Railway Administration may conduct the CBT in single-stage or multi-stage mode.
Stage-by-stage process
Computer Based Test
Candidates first take the CBT. If Railway Administration conducts a second-stage CBT, the first stage may be treated as qualifying only for shortlisting.
Physical Efficiency Test
Candidates are called for the qualifying PET based on CBT merit, at roughly three times the community-wise vacancy count according to the verified CEN extraction.
Document Verification
Candidates who clear the required preceding stages are called for verification of their original eligibility, category and qualification documents.
Medical Examination
Candidates must meet the medical standard prescribed for the relevant Level-1 post before appointment.

What is the RRB Group D selection process?
It runs to 4 stages, in this order: Computer Based Test, Physical Efficiency Test, Document Verification and Medical Examination. Each is described on this page with what it involves and what clearing it requires. You reach a stage only by clearing the one before it, so the whole process is a funnel rather than a checklist you work through in parallel.
Do marks from every RRB Group D stage count towards the final merit?
Not necessarily, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Multi-stage recruitments usually mix two kinds of stage: qualifying ones, which you must clear but whose marks are discarded afterwards, and merit-bearing ones, whose marks carry into the final ranking. Clearing a qualifying stage comfortably earns nothing beyond clearing it, so effort spent pushing that score higher is effort not spent on the stage that decides your rank. The stage descriptions on this page say which is which, and the notification is the authority on it.
Which RRB Group D stage should I prepare for first?
Computer Based Test, because nobody sees stage two without it. It is also the stage with the most competition in it: every applicant sits it, and it exists to cut that field down. What happens at RRB Group D document verification?
Everything you declared when you applied is checked against original documents: date of birth, category, educational qualification, and any relaxation or reservation you claimed. Nothing is re-assessed and no marks are awarded; the stage exists to confirm that the application the whole process was run on was true. A candidate who cannot produce an original at this point is rejected here, after clearing every stage, which is why the conditions are worth checking against your own papers before applying rather than after.
Can the RRB Group D selection process change between cycles?
Yes, and it does. Stages get added, merged or dropped, a qualifying paper becomes merit-bearing, or a skill test moves from one stage to another, and the change is announced in the notification for that cycle rather than separately.
