JEE Advanced Exam Pattern
Joint Entrance Examination Advanced
Four question types per subject, each scored differently, and both papers compulsory. Paper 1 sets four single-correct questions at 3 marks with 1 off, four multiple-select at 4 with partial marks and 1 off otherwise, four numerical-value at 4 with no penalty, and four matching-list at 4 with 1 off. Paper 2 shifts the mix to five multiple-select, five numerical-value and four stem-based numerical questions at 2 marks with no penalty. The numerical types never deduct, which makes them the only free attempts in either paper.
The JEE Advanced exam pattern below is checked stage by stage, so one stage cannot inherit another stage's scoring rules.

All sections share one composite timer, so you are free to move between them and spend your time where it earns most.
JEE Advanced Paper 1 marking scheme
- Each correct answer is worth 3.75 marks.
- Worked example: attempt 38 of the 48 questions and get 29 right and 9 wrong, and you score 108.75 out of 180.
