Most people preparing for one of these exams prepare for both, and that is sensible: the sections carry over almost completely. The trouble starts when you assume the two papers reward the same work. At the headline level they look interchangeable. One level down they are not.
The prelims really are interchangeable
SBI PO Prelims and IBPS PO Prelims are 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes, across English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability, with one-fourth of a question's marks deducted for a wrong answer. The mains totals are identical too
This is where most comparisons stop and get it wrong. Both mains papers set 170 objective questions worth 200 marks. Quoting those totals against each other tells you nothing, because they match exactly.

Where the 200 marks actually sit

That is half a mark a question. On the same paper, one DI question is worth four English questions.
IBPS PO Mains is flatter. Reasoning and Data Interpretation both sit at 1.5 marks a question across 40 questions each, and its awareness section is 50 questions for 60 marks. English is the cheap section on both papers, at half a mark either way.
What that changes about preparation
On SBI PO Mains, Data Interpretation is the densest scoring on the paper and the section where an hour of practice buys the most marks. Its awareness section is the largest by question count at 60, but each of those questions is worth 1 mark, so it rewards breadth rather than depth. On IBPS PO Mains the top of the paper is flatter, and there is no single section that outweighs the others the way DI does at SBI.
English is 40 questions for 20 marks on both mains papers. It still has its own cutoff to clear, so it cannot be skipped, but it is the worst place on either paper to spend your last free hour.
The descriptive papers are counted differently
Both exams end their mains with writing, and the two are not counted the same way. IBPS PO sets 2 descriptive tasks worth 25 marks, and those marks sit inside its 225-mark mains total. SBI PO runs a separately timed descriptive test worth 30 marks for the 2026 cycle, outside the 200-mark objective total. So an SBI PO mains score and an IBPS PO mains score are not directly comparable numbers even when they look like they should be.
The timing difference is small
SBI PO gives 180 minutes for the objective paper. IBPS PO gives 190 minutes across its mains. On a 170-question paper that is a difference of a few seconds a question, which is not where either exam is won or lost. The marks distribution is.
A practical way to use this
Prepare the prelims once, since they are the same exam in all but name. For the mains, let the marks decide your last hours rather than your comfort: at SBI, Data Interpretation; at IBPS, whichever of Reasoning or Data Interpretation is currently weaker, since they are worth the same.
