SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: The Shorter Paper Is Faster
Identical prelims, then two mains papers worth the same 200 marks. The one with 30 fewer questions gives you less time for each of them.
These two exams are close enough that most candidates sit both, and the prelims genuinely are the same paper. The mains are where a reasonable assumption goes wrong: that the paper with fewer questions is the gentler one.
The prelims match
SBI Clerk Prelims and IBPS Clerk Prelims are both 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes, across English Language, Numerical Ability and Reasoning Ability. As with the PO exams a tier above, there is nothing to choose between them at this stage.
Both mains are worth 200 marks, and that is where the similarity ends
SBI Clerk Mains sets 190 objective questions across 2 hours 40 minutes. IBPS Clerk Mains sets 160 questions across 125 minutes. Same 200 marks, thirty questions apart, and thirty-five minutes apart.

Fewer questions, less time each
Divide the clock by the question count and the shorter paper turns out to be the quicker one. SBI Clerk gives roughly 50.5 seconds a question. IBPS Clerk gives roughly 46.9. The paper that looks lighter on the notification is the one that asks you to move faster.
A shorter paper is not a slower paper. Compare seconds per question, not question counts.
One section at SBI is worth more than the rest
SBI Clerk Mains does not weight every question the same. Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude is 50 questions carrying 60 marks, which works out at 1.2 marks a question and makes it the only section on the paper above a flat mark. General Financial Awareness, General English and Quantitative Aptitude each carry their question count in marks.
What we can and cannot tell you about the IBPS split
Current sources agree on the IBPS Clerk Mains totals of 160 questions, 200 marks and 125 minutes, and agree that Quantitative Aptitude rose from 35 questions to 40. They disagree with each other on the exact per-section question and marks split, and the official notification could not be independently read for this article. So the pace comparison above uses only the totals, which are not in dispute, and we are not going to print a per-section table we cannot stand behind. What to do with this
If you are sitting both, practise at the tighter pace, because preparing at 47 seconds a question leaves you comfortable at 50 and the reverse does not hold. At SBI, reasoning is where the extra marks per question are. Sit a SBI Clerk mock test and an IBPS Clerk mock test under a real clock rather than trusting either notification to tell you how the pace feels.
