Direction Sense questions with solutions

6 from the 266-question pool, worked in full.

  1. 1. Point A is 8 km north of point B. Point C is 6 km east of point A. What is the shortest distance between B and C?

    • A. 14 km
    • B. 8 km
    • C. 12 km
    • D. 10 km

    Solution. B to A is 8 km and A to C is 6 km, at a right angle. By the Pythagorean theorem, BC = √(8² + 6²) = √100 = 10 km.

  2. 2. Anil starts from a point and walks 9 km south, then turns left and walks 9 km, then turns left again and walks 9 km. How far is he from his starting point, and in which direction?

    • A. 9 km, west
    • B. 18 km, east
    • C. 9 km, east
    • D. 9 km, north

Solution. South 9 km, then left turn (east, since he was facing south) 9 km, then left turn (north) 9 km. The south and north legs cancel out, leaving only the 9 km eastward displacement.

  3. 3. If you are facing north-east and turn 180 degrees, which direction are you now facing?

    • A. North-West
    • B. South-East
    • C. South-West
    • D. North-East

Solution. Turning 180 degrees reverses the direction completely, so facing north-east becomes facing south-west.

  4. 4. A man starts from his office and walks 4 km South, then 3 km West, then 4 km North. How far and in which direction is he from his office now?

    • A. 3 km, West
    • B. 7 km, West
    • C. 3 km, East
    • D. 5 km, North-West

Solution. The two 4 km legs (South then North) cancel, leaving only the 3 km westward leg, so he is 3 km West of the office.

    • A. 8 m west
    • B. 6 m north
    • C. 8 m east of the marker
    • D. 10 m east
    • E. 14 m south

Solution. South then east then north cancels vertical displacement, leaving 8 m east.

  6. 6. Nina walks 6 m north, turns right and walks 8 m, then turns right and walks 6 m. Where is she relative to her starting point?

    • A. 8 m west
    • B. 10 m east
    • C. 6 m north
    • D. 8 m east

Solution. The north and south movements cancel; she ends 8 m east.
