Part 1 Introduction and interview
[This part of the test begins with the examiner introducing himself or herself and checking the candidate’s identification. It then continues as an interview.]
Let’s talk about the school you attend.
Let’s talk about your ideal school.
Examiner: In this part of the interview I am going to ask you some questions about yourself? Let’s talk about school. What school do you go to?
Candidate: I go to a secondary school in my city and I am in second class.
Examiner: What do you like about your school?
Candidate: I like my teachers and that I have many friends there. I also like the long breaks because then I can relax a bit.
Examiner: What subjects are you good at?
Candidate: I am quite good at foreign languages. I am learning English and Spanish. I have good marks in Biology but I don’t like it very much.
Examiner: What is your least favourite subject?
Candidate: My least favourite subject is Maths. I always had a problem with Maths and I have to study a lot to get a good mark. I don’t like the teacher either.
Examiner: Let’s move on to how you imagine an ideal school. What subjects would be taught in your ideal school?
Candidate: Foreign languages, obviously. Maybe some Maths but not too much. Oh and definitely lots of PE because it’s good for you.
Examiner: How long would the breaks be between lessons?
Candidate: Definitely a long dinner break so maybe 30 minutes and 10 minutes between lessons so that everyone has enough time to talk to friends and change classrooms.
Examiner: Would there be any homework?
Candidate: I think homework is important because it helps you learn so I think students should get homework but maybe not on Fridays.
Examiner: Would there be any marks?
Candidate: No. Only from end of semester exams. Everyone would be more relaxed if they didn’t get marks all the time.
Examiner: Thank you. This is the end of part 1.
Individual long turn
Candidate Task Card
Describe a holiday you really enjoyed.
You should say:
where and when you went
who you went with
what you did
and explain why you like it so much.
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Rounding off questions
Would you ever like to go back there?
Would you recommend this place to your friends?
Examiner: Can we start now? Remember you have one to two minutes to speak about the topic so don’t worry if I stop you.
Examiner: You can start speaking now.
Candidate: So the holiday I enjoyed most was when I went to Bulgaria when I was 6 or 7 years old. I went with my mum, dad and my brother. It was my first time to go abroad and I was very ……. excited. We lived in a tent very close to the beach. We swam all day in the Black sea and we ate lots of fruit that grew on the trees …….like…….peaches and grapes. Water was very warm and for the first time I saw a …… jellyfish and crabs. I really liked that holiday because me and my brother had lots of fun.
Examiner: Thank you. Would you recommend this place to your friends?
Candidate: Yes, I think I so. The Black sea is beautiful and very interesting to see.
Examiner: Thank you. That’s the end of part 2.
Let’s talk about how people like to spend their holidays.
Finally, let’s talk about the package holidays.
Examiner: We have been talking about holidays. Now I would like to discuss with you one or two more general questions about the topic. Let’s talk about travel. Do you think people travel more or less than in the past?
Candidate: I think people travel a lot more now than in the past. Flying used to be very expensive so not many people went far away but today we have many cheap flights to all over the world so it’s much easier. Also almost everyone has a car so it is much easier too to travel long distances.
Examiner: Do you think that train travel is still popular?
Candidate: Yes, I know many young people who travel by train because they don’t have a car and can’t buy a plane ticket because for them it’s expensive.
Examiner: Why can’t they afford a plane ticket or car?
Candidate: Because they’re in school and they have to concentrate on learning so they don’t have time for a job to make money.
Examiner: Why do you think people like to travel to tropical places?
Candidate: I think because of the weather. If you don’t live someplace warm, you want to go someplace hot for holiday and see things and places that are different than where you live.
Examiner: What kind of things do you think people want to see?
Candidate: I think the nature in tropical countries is very unique and even the buildings look different. People act different also.
Examiner: Tell me more about how people who live in warm climates act differently …
