Transcript

Examiner: Now, in this first part, I’d like to ask you some more questions about yourself, OK? Let’s talk about music. What are your favourite types of music?

Candidate: I really like dance music and hip hop music. That’s what I listen too most often

Examiner: Why do you like these types of music?

Candidate: Because I like rhythm and a good melody. This music makes me want to dance and makes me happy.

Examiner: Who is your favourite musical artist?

Candidate: Well my favourite artist is Freddy Mercury from Queen. Their music has always been a favourite of mine.

Examiner: Have you ever seen them live?

Candidate: Unfortunately the Freddy Mercury died many years ago, but if he was alive I would love to go them.

Examiner: Let’s move on to music on the Internet.

Candidate: Ok.

Examiner: Do you listen to music on the Internet?

Candidate: Yes of course. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t.

Examiner: What do you think about downloading music from the Internet?

Candidate: If you buy songs from a website and download them then there is nothing wrong with that. But if you download without paying than that is a crime and you can get in trouble.

Examiner: How do you think YouTube has changed the way people listen to music?

Candidate: It changed where we can listen to music. You just need to have your phone and you have your music. YouTube also recommends new music so you can listen to new artists you haven’t heard of before.

Examiner: Do you think people will ever go back to listening to music on CDs, tapes or vinyl?

Candidate: I don’t think so. It’s much easier to listen on the Internet or on an app than to have many  CD and you also need a cd player to listen to CDs.

Transcript

Examiner: Alright? Remember you have one to two minutes for this, so don’t worry if I stop you. I’ll tell you when the time is up.

Candidate: OK

Examiner: Can you start speaking now, please?

Candidate: Yes. The last live concert I went to was a concert of one of my favourite singers. This was 2 years ago. It was in Warsaw in a very small pub. The performer is not very popular. He’s a folk singer who plays the harmonica and the guitar. He writes his own songs. I enjoyed this concert a lot because it was a very small venue so I sat in the front row. I know all the songs he sand and I had a chance to talk to him after the concert. I would definitely recommend this artist and his shows to anyone who likes small folk music concerts.

Examiner: Thank you. What is more enjoyable for you, listening to prerecorded music or live music?

Candidate: I think I enjoy prerecorded music more because I can just turn it on and do whatever I need to do. Studying, cleaning or relaxing on my bed listening to what I like most. At concerts you have to stand and pay attention. This is ok sometimes but not all the time.

Part 3 – Two- waydiscussion

Let’s consider how people’s music tastes have changed over the years.

  • How does music you listen to differ from the music your grandparents or parents listened to?
  • How do you think music will change in the future?

Finally let’s talk about the role of music:

  • Why do you think people invented music and why do they need it so much in their lives?

Transcript

Examiner:We’ve been talking about music. I’d like to discuss with you one or two more general questions relating to this topic. How does music you listen to differ from the music your grandparents or parents listened to?

Candidate: I would have to say that the music I listen to and my parents listened to when they were my age is very different.  They really liked Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Hendrix, so rock. I also like rock but dance and hip hop is my favourite.

Examiner: Do you know what your grandparents listened to?

Candidate: I think they listened to music from the fifties and fourties but I don’t know any artist names.

Examiner: OK.  That was quite a long time ago.

Candidate: Yes. Artists from a long time ago are not very famous now, so I know nothing about them.

Examiner: How do you think music will change in the future?

Candidate: I think people will be listening to much more electronic music. That is very popular. Anyone can make their own music on the computer. That is really good because we can have so many new artists who can create music almost for free.

Examiner: What about classical music?

Candidate: Classical music will always be popular because it is beautiful and very elegant. I think people will always will listen to this type of music.

Examiner: Finally let’s talk about the role of music.

Candidate: OK

Examiner: Why do you think people invented music?

Candidate: I have no idea. Humans are very creative. They like to make and invent new things. I think Africa is where we should look for where music was first created. Maybe it was an accident. Who knows?

Examiner: What do you mean by accident?

Candidate: I mean that maybe someone a long time ago started to hit something with a stick and noticed that the rhythm is something that makes them feel good so they started experimenting with rhythm and other sounds.

Examiner: I see. Why do you think people need music so much in their lives?

Candidate: This is another difficult question. I think music just makes people feel good inside. It makes us want to dance or sometimes cry because it is so beautiful or sad. It lets people show their emotions and feelings are important to everyone especially the good ones. That’s why so many people like dance music because it makes people happy.
